Nina Storey, 24 Off the Board

Nina Storey’s latest release, 24 Off the Board, is an incredible two disc live recording from a set of shows over the course of 3 nights at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, CA. Recorded and mixed by her father Bill Storey, an award winning engineer in his own right, this recording captures the excitement of Nina’s live shows. From the introduction where Dallas, of Moe’s Alley, testifies that he would enjoy listening to Nina read the phone book, to the bonus studio version of “All the Little Things,” this is about two hours of terrific music. Nina is right on with her performances, her band backs her up solidly, and the mix is just right to capture the subtelties of the live show without too much crowd noise or distractions. Most of the songs are new, with the exception of “Ill Communication” off Nina Storey and “If I Were An Angel” and “Coffee and Margaritas” off Shades. About half the tracks show off her new prowess at the keyboard. Some of them rock like “Over Now” and some them are overtly sensual like “This Naked Woman” and “Any Way You Want Me” Then, there’s “Hero,” which she wrote several years ago, inspired by a Broncos Super Bowl victory. That one needed recording. “30 Miles” breaks with the rest of the album in a down and dirty blues number for which her voice is perfectly suited. The gospel sounds of “Give Me A Reason” throws the listener another reason to respect Storey’s voice. The Studio version of “All the little Things,” produced by Jeremy Lawton, showcases Nina’s considerable R&B chops. Most of the lyrics illuminate the everyday emotions that we all feel and that makes this music something that anyone can relate to. Overall this collection sounds great (especially for a live recording) and you should do yourself a favor and buy it.
