Zebra Junction – Waterborne

Zebra Junction - Waterborne

Waterborne, Zebra Junction

Waterborne amuses this reviewer to no end. It’s an entertaining mixture of folksy acoustic songs and not so folksy acoustic creativity. Swerving wildly between traditional bluegrass and acoustic rock. Interspersed between the songs are weird ramblings from “Zeb” who is apparently, an old musical geezer, happy to share his words of wisdom with everyone in earshot. Who Zeb is or where they found him, is probably a whole story unto itself, but not one included with this disk. His discombobulated ramblings provide a fascinating stream-of-consciousness flavor for this disk. A few songs have an old-timey banjo-folk sound that feels as authentic as you can imagine, coming from a couple guys from cowtown. The redneck tune “Honey” is a little disjointed, like they intended. “Chickens Will Sing” is just as odd the title suggests. Title track, Waterborne is an Irish folk number. “Vanity” veers way from the acoustic stuff with a Playskool tape deck, flute-loops and clavinet. It’s cool, but has a completely different feel than the rest of the album. At it’s worst, this album might be considered too uneven or weird for some tastes, but we loved it.
