Ultrachronic, Ultrachronic

This self-titled demo CD from Ultrachronic showcases cool funky rhythms and urban style rapping. The retro-funky guitar riffing recalls some of the best stuff from the 1970s. Unfortunately, the production quality is low enough to make the sound “local” and some of the songs could benefit from the input of a skilled producer. “Poolside” has particularly awkward lyrics/rapping. The groove is cool and the chorus rocks, but in between we get the impression that vocalist Kyle Ingram is trying too hard to squeeze too many words into too small a space. Rap vocals are a rhythm instrument and timing is crucial. They need to work on that for their next recording. We’ve seen these guys perform live and so we know this disc doesn’t represent them as well as it ought to. We look forward to hearing their next one.
