The Commodes, Cursed From The Beginning

Cursed From The Beginning, a 5 song CD from The Commodes, surprised us. We usually don’t much care for punk. Cursed, though, doesn’t suck. Sure, true to the genre, the vocals don’t consist of much actual singing, instead it’s rapid chanting or outright screaming. The lyrics are indecipherable without seeing them written out in the liner notes (and those are printed in an annoyingly difficult to read font). The guitar work consists of lots of Ramones style simple rapid chords. But we like the extra touches they added in the studio – a single piano note at the start of the first track, “The Crimson Conscience,” and some disturbingly cool backing vocals in “Sympathy Symphony.” These cool little additions contrast nicely with the classic punk style of the rest of the work without being obnoxious. Overall the CD stands up as a fun little batch of well produced punk ditties.
Buy this CD if you like punk or if you just want to hear something different and cool.
