Strange Condition - Sometime Saturday

Sometime Saturday, Strange Condition

Strange Condition’s Sometime Saturday has eleven tracks of mostly original material. The whole CD is edgier than expected. It’s mostly pop rock done pretty well. While the first two tracks rock pretty hard, the third one, “Fading Faces,” provides a mood changing dose of mellow acoustic rock. “The Last Day” has lyrics about finding/losing faith, which is the kind of stuff that sometimes gets these guys labeled as Christian Rockers. Fortunately, that’s the only one and it’s pretty easy to enjoy the song without even listening to the lyrics. “Wicked Game” is a nice cover of the Chris Isaak tune. The final track is a reprise of “Eternally” which is noted as being the “Atkins Mix.” Apparently, Atkins loves too much thunder in the drums because that’s all this track has to offer. We think the disc would have been just fine without this track. Our main criticism, which jumped out after listening to the first two cuts is the annoyingly ringy snare drum tone which sounds like a big tin can. We like a nice sharp crack on the snare, but prefer to leave the ringing after tones to timbales. Drum tuning is highly subjective, so other listeners might easily disagree with our opinion. While overall, the disc is good, we think that a producer could bring more out of these guys and take their music up to the next level. Having seen a bunch of their live performances we can’t help but think they didn’t quite capture that same energy on this album.
