Newcomers Home, Newcomers Home

Newcomers Home, the self-titled release from the Boulder-based band, shows off some pretty impressive acoustic rock chops.  The production quality on the disc’s eleven tracks is top-notch.  Recorded mostly at a studio in Nashville with the bass and drums recorded locally in Lyons, CO, they obviously got things right.  The music has a refreshing simplicity, bordering on country, but not quite going over the line.  The lead vocals from Kate Herzig combine with the Laurie Thornton’s violin, viola and backing vocals providing an emotional quailty to the music.  Most of the songs have a reality of life quality that crosses over to the dark, almost depressing side.  It’s like the pretty sounding side of unrequieted love or the sweet side of “parting is such sweet sorrow.”  This is reflected in lyrics like “One Chance to say goodbye, One love one more time…” and “Anywhere but here.”  Fortunately, this won’t keep you from loving the songs and wanting to hear them over and over again.
